Received 27 March 2013; Received in final form 26 April 2013; Accepted 03 May 2013. A 16-year-old boy presented with posterior cervical pain radiating to the right upper limb. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an intramedullary cavernous angioma (CA) in the level of C2. Susceptibility-weighted ima ging (SWI) showed longitudinal hypointensity from the bulb to the level of T1, which was suggestive of a longitudinal fiber-dissecting hemorrhage (Figure). Intramedullary CAs are associated with an increased risk of hemorrhage. SWI is optimized for detection of magnetic susceptibility effects of blood products1. SWI is more sensitive for detection of CAs in the brain2, but the usefulness of SWI in cases of spinal CAs is not known.

Medullary hemorrhage that preceded the onset of multiple cavernous angiomas.

Medullary hemorrhage is rare, and the causative role of hypertension still remains controversial. Cavernous angioma and other vascular malformations have been reported to cause medullary hemorrhage. A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for vertigo. Medullary hemorrhage and multiple small hypointense lesions were detected on T2-star weighted magnetic resonance imaging (T2*W MRI). One a...

The value of susceptibility weighted magnetic resonance imaging in evaluation of patients with familial cerebral cavernous angioma.

OBJECTIVES We investigated the imaging features of Cavernous angioma (CA) lesions and the value of Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) by comparing with T2*-weighted gradient echo (GRE) sequences in patients with familial CA disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 19 familial CA patients (8 men, 11 women; mean age, 36 years). T1-weighted, T2-weighted, T2*-weighted GRE, an...

PET findings of intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord using [18F] FDG and [11C] methionine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Only a few reports on intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord using PET have been published. We report findings of PET by using [(18)F] fluorodeoxyglucose and [(11)C] methionine and discuss the usefulness of the findings in patients with intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord. MATERIALS AND METHODS PET/CT was performed in 9 patients with intramedullary tumors of the ...

Cavernous angioma of the cavernous sinus: imaging findings.

Cavernous angiomas (cavernomas) of the cavernous sinus are uncommon, with only scattered reports in literature. Unlike their parenchymatous counterparts, they are intensely enhancing para-sellar masses, iso/hypointense in T1- and hyperintense in T2-weighted images. Differential diagnosis with para-sellar meningiomas and schwannomas can be difficult. We report three cases of this condition, desc...

Intramedullary cavernous angiomas of the spinal cord: clinical characteristics of 13 lesions.

Magnetic resonance imaging has increased the incidence of the diagnosis of intramedullary cavernous angioma. Surgical therapy tends not to be recommended for asymptomatic lesions, but symptomatic lesions that bleed recurrently should be treated. The natural course of intramedullary cavernous angioma remains unknown and arguments have been raised against the surgical treatment of symptomatic les...
